ScholarShot is focused on helping at-risk students exit poverty by completing career-ready vocational, associate, or bachelor degrees. Corporate partners like Capital One are helpful in preparing our Scholars for a successful post-graduate career.

Although Capital One’s involvement with ScholarShot began only a few short months ago, it has been an incredibly impactful partnership. Capital One Engagement Strategist Unique Carey hosted a virtual event that brought together ScholarShot students and Capital One this summer. A panel of Capital One Employees discussed their journey from college to career for our scholars. Exposure to post graduate career choices is crucial – especially when our Scholars have the opportunity to listen to stories from other first-generation college students that are now active members of the North Texas work force. During these virtual events with Corporate sponsors, ScholarShot students discuss, ask questions, and request feedback to help prepare them for their own post-graduate journey.

Often times, these events help our Scholars clarify their chosen career path and identify potential internships to build their resume and skill set.

The Capital One Employee Panel made quite the impact on our ScholarShot scholars, and Program Director, April Tillett, quickly began planning the next virtual event! Capital One chose to focus on teaching principles of credit and finance to our Scholars during the next event, because many students graduate college and enter the working world without basic financial skills. While part of the ScholarShot program is assisting Scholars with creating and managing their college tuition budget, the Capital One team will provide another way for our Scholars to understand the importance of their post-graduate finances.

As 2020 draws to a close, collaboration between Capital One and ScholarShot continues. With the help of our Corporate Partner, we better prepare our North Texas students for a career post-graduation. Partners like Capital One help create exposure for our Scholars and our program. Thank you to Capital One for inspiring our Scholars!
